Postdoctoral Research Associate


Dr. Md Shafiqul Islam is the Postdoctoral Research Associate for the McKechnie Family LIFE Home. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech, where he specialized in system evaluation and inclusive design. As the postdoctoral associate at the LIFE Home, Dr. Islam is responsible for supporting the LIFE Home Assistant Director of Research in developing industry and faculty research collaborations for the LIFE Home, managing research communications, developing innovative way to provide LIFE Home tours, maintaining the smart technology infrastructure of the LIFE Home and providing mentorship and supervision to the LIFE Home interns, students or volunteers.

Dr. Islam is an active member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). He previously served as the President of the Virginia Tech HFES Student chapter. Currently, he is the Communications Director for the Extended Reality Technical Group and the Awards Chair for the Training Technical Group. His active involvement with HFES earned him the HFES Student Member with Honors award in 2023.

Prior to starting his Ph.D., Dr. Islam also worked as a Production Engineer for Avery Dennison, gaining experience in process improvement and system efficiency. To know more about Dr. Islam’s research and professional activities, visit his website: shafiqul.net
